Magic: The Traveling

A Magic: the Gathering travel blog
Finding MtG in the most unlikely places

Wait, is it 2011 already?

If you’re like me (and I have every reason to think you are) then you’ve spent the last two weeks pre/releasing your way through the new core set. Here in the sun drenched, famously hot home of MtT we are blessed with not one but two ginourmous magic play groups: The Columbia Magic League and ColumbiaFreeMagic. One of these groups gets prize support from Wizards and runs top-tier tournament players, the other likes to get drunk and run Fallen Empire sealed events (Thorn Thallid FTW!).

I’ll let you figure out which one I spend more time at.

Anyways, the upshot is that any time a new set is released we get to play in twice as many events as we bounce from playgroup to playgroup. Of course I only got to play in half of the events since I was on a trip to Raleigh, NC to find a certain arthropod construct. Day 1 I pulled an underwhelming pool and decided to run black disruption/white fliers –big mistake when you don’t have any angels/arbiters, and got creamed most of the afternoon. I did however pull a Phylactery Lich –which due to my obsession with Order of the Stick (Hey Xykon! Call Me!) I felt compelled to play. While not quite worthy of an evilgasm, I was never sad when it hit the board and I’ve already ordered a bunch of Darksteel indestructible artifacts for him to play with.

Day 2, with a strikingly similar pool, I nixed the white and beefed up into green and ramped right up into a Demon of Death’s Gate for a 3-0 afternoon.I swear the more beer I drink, the better I play.

Since the Magic 2010 reboot, I’ve totally fallen back in love with core sets. 2011 looks great and I’m super excited about replacing every single Spire Owl I own for the upgraded scrying goodness of Augury Owl. Not sure what I’ll do with those Spires though, maybe I’ll send them the way of Chaos Confetti.
